A young West Yorkshire decorator is brushing up his skills in a bid to compete in front of over 150,000 spectators at the world’s largest vocational skills contest.

Thomas Waudby, 21, of Leeds, is one of three decorators battling it out to represent the UK in the WorldSkills contest, often referred to as the ‘Skills Olympics.’
With only one place in Team UK, Tom is taking part in intensive blocks of training with the aim of making the final selection, which is announced later this month.
If successful, he will have the chance to go head to head with other decorators from across the globe and compete for the accolade of the world’s best painter and decorator.
Tom, who trained at Leeds College of Building and works for Bagnalls, Leeds Office said: “If I become a member of Team UK it will be a huge honour.”
Tom appears in a video produced by Crown Paints - sponsors of the Painting and Decorating competition at WorldSkills 2011 – created to raise awareness of the contest.
Available to view here where it is hosted at www.youtube.com/crownpaint other films produced in the series include interviews with the other two candidates, Rachel Terras, 21, from Scotland and Sadie Jones, 22, from Derbyshire, as well as the competition manager from Crown Paints and the WorldSkills Painting and Decorating training manager.
Debbie Orr, Senior Brand Manager at Crown Paints, said: “The coaching that goes into making the candidates ready to tackle this global contest is first-class and Thomas is working really hard to achieve success.”
