Wooden Spoon Veterans Charity Rugby Match
Last Sunday Chelmsford Rugby Club hosted a Charity Rugby Match at Coronation Park for the Wooden Spoon, which is the children’s charity of Rugby.

A match took place between the Essex Bishops XV and a Wooden Spoon Essex XV. The Bishops are the official veterans side of Essex Rugby Football Union and the Spooners are an invitational side which is drawn up from players from a variety of clubs in Essex. Each player was asked to raise sponsorship of £100 to be part of the team. Prior to the game there was a buffet and afterwards a raffle and an auction of memorabilia took place.
Jason Leonard OBE who is a Lead Ambassador for the charity was supposed to play for the Essex Bishops, but unfortunately he was unable to attend. However, the Spooners had in their ranks, Jeff Probyn the ex England prop forward who won 37 caps for England back in the 1980’s and 90’s. The game was played in 4 periods of 20 minutes each and both sides had up to 15 replacements which meant that they were able to rotate their players.

The match itself turned out to be a thoroughly enjoyable game played in a good spirit, but with no quarters given. The Bishops ran out worthy winners by 48 – 20, scoring eight tries in the process to the Spooners three.
The event was sponsored by Envirosolar, suppliers and installers of solar panels, who are based in Chelmsford Essex.
